Ports and Port Authorities
There are 22 ports that connect Michigan to the world as part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Ports are governed under a variety of jurisdictional types, including public or municipally-owned ports, port authorities, and private ports. Ports have large infrastructure needs by nature of their designs, as they must be large enough and deep enough to handle freight traffic. The construction and maintenance of ports should be sensitive to the natural ecosystem of the harbor, and should minimize adverse impacts.
