Septic System Runoff

DEQ - Septage good practices

Septic systems and septage waste receiving facilities on open fields need to be tightly managed and monitored to avoid causing adverse effects from runoff.  The DEQ has defined setback requirements for such facilities, to minimize impacts of runoff and odor, as well as good practices for spreading or possibly injecting the septage on-site.  Septage should not be dumped in wetlands or allowed to pond on the storage site surface. Communities should also make sure no septage leaves the site and manage possible pathways out such as flowing down a slope on-site, trailing from a truck that just dumped on the site, or from animals who may travel on or near the site.
